The Kenyan community in the United States is mourning the deaths of Linda Masinde in Baltimore, Maryland, and Jessica Omoke in Minnesota, with memorial events planned in both states to honor their lives.

Linda Masinde died in Nairobi on 18 May, leaving family members and friends in Baltimore grieving her loss. She was remembered by relatives and members of the Kenyan diaspora as a kind and generous person who maintained close ties within the community.

Linda was the daughter of Janet Masinde, sister to the late Brenda, Yolanda and Hannah, and aunt to Kailani and Keanna. She was also closely connected to her extended family, including her aunt Sheila Mujera.

Baltimore memorial gathering

Linda is scheduled to be buried in Nairobi on 21 May. Family and friends in Baltimore are organizing a memorial gathering on 22 May from 5 PM to 10 PM to celebrate her life. Organizers said details of the venue will be shared with the community.

Minnesota candlelight vigil

A candlelight vigil in Jessica Omoke's memory was scheduled to take place at Soo Line Park in Crystal on 20 May at 7:30 PM. Community members were asked to bring candles as a sign of remembrance and support for her family.

The deaths of Linda Masinde and Jessica Omoke have brought together Kenyan diaspora communities across the United States, with friends, relatives and supporters gathering to mourn and honor their memories.

A wave of loss

The twin tragedies come amid a difficult period for the Kenyan diaspora in the US, which has also been mourning the death of Biko Miregwa of Seattle, Washington, who passed away on 8 May after a short illness. Multiple memorial services and fundraisers have been organized across several states as communities rally to support grieving families and cover repatriation costs.

These deaths underscore the critical role of community support networks in the diaspora, particularly when families face the logistical and financial challenges of mourning loved ones across continents. Harambee fundraisers and memorial gatherings have become essential lifelines for families navigating the complex arrangements required when death occurs far from home.
