Baltimore mourns Linda Masinde as memorial set for May 22
Linda Masinde of Baltimore, Maryland, died in Nairobi on May 18. The Kenyan diaspora community is organizing a memorial gathering on May 22 from 5 PM to 10 PM to celebrate her life.
Linda Masinde, a long-term resident of Baltimore, Maryland, died unexpectedly in Nairobi on May 18, leaving family members and friends in both Kenya and the United States grieving her loss.
Masinde was remembered by relatives and members of the Kenyan diaspora as a kind and generous person who maintained close ties within the community. She was the daughter of Janet Masinde, sister to the late Brenda, Yolanda, and Hannah, and aunt to Kailani and Keanna. She was also closely connected to her extended family, including her aunt Sheila Mujera.
Memorial in Baltimore
Linda is scheduled to be buried in Nairobi on May 21. Family and friends in Baltimore are organizing a memorial gathering on May 22 from 5 PM to 10 PM to celebrate her life. Organisers said details of the venue will be shared with the community.
The memorial offers an opportunity for those who cannot travel to Kenya to gather, share memories, and support one another. For many in the diaspora, these gatherings serve as vital spaces for collective mourning when distance makes attendance at funerals in Kenya impossible.
A week of loss
Linda's death comes during a difficult period for the Kenyan diaspora in the United States. The community is also mourning Jessica Omoke in Minnesota, whose candlelight vigil took place on May 20 at Soo Line Park in Crystal. Both deaths have brought together Kenyan diaspora communities across the United States, with friends, relatives, and supporters gathering to mourn and honour their memories.
The losses underscore the emotional and logistical challenges faced by diaspora families when a loved one dies, particularly when death occurs in Kenya while the bulk of the immediate community is in the United States. Funeral costs, travel arrangements, and the strain of coordinating events across two continents add layers of difficulty to an already painful experience.
For Linda's family, the next few days will be split between honouring her in Nairobi and gathering in Baltimore—two ceremonies, two continents, one community bound by grief and memory.
