Two deaths within days of each other have brought Kenyan diaspora communities across the United States together in grief. Linda Masinde of Baltimore, Maryland, and Jessica Omoke of Minnesota have left families and friends mourning, with memorial events planned in both states to honour their lives.

Linda Masinde died in Nairobi on May 18, leaving family members and friends in Baltimore grieving her loss. She was remembered by relatives and members of the Kenyan diaspora as a kind and generous person who maintained close ties within the community.

Linda was the daughter of Janet Masinde, sister to the late Brenda, Yolanda and Hannah, and aunt to Kailani and Keanna. She was also closely connected to her extended family, including her aunt Sheila Mujera. Linda was scheduled to be buried in Nairobi on May 21. Family and friends in Baltimore are organising a memorial gathering on May 22 from 5 PM to 10 PM to celebrate her life. Organisers said details of the venue will be shared with the community.

Minnesota mourns Jessica Omoke

In Minnesota, the community is also grieving the loss of Jessica Omoke. While details of her death remain limited, her passing has deeply affected those who knew her. According to community announcements, a candlelight vigil in Jessica's memory was planned to take place at Soo Line Park in Crystal on May 20 at 7:30 PM. Community members were asked to bring candles as a sign of remembrance and support for her family.

The deaths of Linda Masinde and Jessica Omoke have brought together Kenyan diaspora communities across the United States, with friends, relatives and supporters gathering to mourn and honour their memories.

The diaspora bond

These twin tragedies underscore the tight bonds within Kenyan diaspora communities across the United States. When loss strikes, community members rally—organising memorials, supporting families with funeral costs, and providing emotional support to those grieving far from extended family networks in Kenya.

For many in the diaspora, such gatherings serve multiple purposes: they are spaces to mourn collectively, to maintain cultural traditions around death and remembrance, and to reinforce the support networks that make life abroad more bearable. The memorial events being organised in Baltimore and Minnesota will offer communities a chance to celebrate the lives of two women who touched many, and to support their families through unimaginable grief.

The losses also highlight a recurring challenge for diaspora families—navigating the complex logistics of death across continents, including repatriation decisions, funeral arrangements in multiple countries, and the emotional toll of being far from home during times of loss.
