The United Nigerian Americans Council in Maryland is focused on motivating and empowering members to become active participants in the American democratic process, according to its leader Dr Chris Ademiluyi.

In a statement released on May 23, Ademiluyi said the community organisation, created in 2019, encourages members to register and vote, and to run for political offices in the United States.

Building Political Power

"Our vision and dedication continue to guide the organisation's efforts in advocating greater political participation and representation in Maryland," Ademiluyi said while defending Nigerians contesting political offices.

The community leader emphasised that the organisation is geared to increase the number of passionate voters who can make a real difference in elections and policy decisions. "UNAC-MD is committed to raising awareness and building support within the Nigerian American community," she added.

A Unique Approach

Ademiluyi noted that the organisation promotes and acknowledges the unique perspective of its members: while they may not believe in making direct financial contributions to politicians, their votes are viewed as a powerful form of support.

This approach reflects the reality that many Nigerian Americans, particularly first-generation immigrants, prioritise direct community support and remittances to Nigeria over campaign donations, yet still want their voices heard in American politics.

Why This Matters

The push for greater Nigerian political participation in the United States comes as the African diaspora—and specifically the Nigerian community—grows in influence across several states. Maryland, home to significant Nigerian populations in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, has seen increasing numbers of African immigrants engage in local and state politics.

By encouraging Nigerians to run for office, not just vote, UNAC-MD is positioning the community to shape policy on issues that directly affect immigrants, including healthcare access, education, immigration reform, and economic opportunity.

The organisation's work also reflects a broader trend among African diaspora communities in the US: moving from political engagement as voters to direct representation in elected office. Nigerian Americans have increasingly sought seats on school boards, city councils, and state legislatures across the country.
