Mystery Surrounds Death of 25-Year-Old Kenyan Student Weeks After Arriving in Sydney
Sheila Jepkorir Chebii died in Sydney on May 17, just six weeks after arriving in Australia to pursue a master's degree. Her family is demanding answers from Australian authorities as circumstances remain unclear.
Sheila Jepkorir Chebii's dream of becoming an international financial consultant ended abruptly on May 17 in Sydney, only six weeks after she landed in Australia with her future mapped out before her.
The 25-year-old accounting graduate from Kabarak University had arrived in Australia on April 5, 2026, to begin a master's degree in accounting and auditing. Born in 2000 in Kobil village, Kimumu, Eldoret, she was the fourth of five children and had been pursuing her CPA(K) qualification before deciding to study abroad.
Her sudden death has left her family scrambling for answers from Australian authorities and Kenyan diplomats. The circumstances surrounding her passing remain unclear, and no official cause of death has been released.
A Life Cut Short
Sheila's passing is part of a devastating week for the Kenyan diaspora. Her death came just days after Biko Miregwa died in Seattle on May 8 following a short illness, and another Kenyan, Dennis Kiprono, drowned off the Sydney coast in March after being swept away by Pacific Ocean currents.
The Kenyan community in Sydney, still reeling from Kiprono's drowning, has rallied around Sheila's family. Many described her death as emblematic of the hopes and risks young Kenyans take when they relocate abroad to build better futures.
Community in Mourning
Back in Kobil village, relatives, neighbours, and friends have gathered at the family home to offer support. Tributes have poured in on social media from Kenyans in Kenya and abroad, with many expressing shock at how quickly her new chapter turned to tragedy.
According to Mwakilishi, a leading diaspora news outlet, two other Kenyans—John Munga in Victoria and Peter Nyakundi Maragia in Western Australia—also died in recent months in separate incidents, bringing the total to at least five Kenyan deaths in Australia since March 2026.
What Comes Next
The family is working with Kenyan diplomats in Canberra to repatriate Sheila's body and obtain a full report on the cause of death. Australian authorities have confirmed an investigation is underway but have not provided a timeline for releasing findings.
For diaspora families, Sheila's death is a stark reminder of the isolation and vulnerability students face when tragedies strike far from home.
