Sheila Jepkorir Chebii left Kenya through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on April 4 and arrived in Australia the following day, carrying dreams of building a career as an international financial consultant. Six weeks later, she was dead in Sydney.

The 26-year-old accounting graduate from Kimumu, Eldoret, had enrolled for a master's degree in accounting and auditing in Australia. On May 17, she died under circumstances her family says remain unclear, prompting urgent calls for a full investigation by Australian authorities and the Kenyan embassy.

What happened

Preliminary information suggests Chebii may have suffered a fatal fall while on duty, though the exact circumstances have not been confirmed. Her father, Samuel Kiptanui Chebii, a retired teacher, told Kenyan media the family was struggling to understand what had happened to their daughter.

He has called on Australian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, including a review of CCTV footage and workplace safety procedures. An autopsy is expected after preliminary police inquiries are completed.

The family has also appealed to the Kenyan embassy in Australia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide diplomatic support and ensure transparency during the investigation.

A life of promise

Born in 2000, Chebii was the fourth of five children. She graduated from Kabarak University in 2024 with a degree in accounting and later enrolled for the CPA(K) qualification. Her parents viewed her education as an opportunity to improve the lives of people in their community in Sambirir, Marakwet East.

Friends and relatives who gathered at the family home in Kobil village described her as hardworking, ambitious, and full of promise. Many said her death reflects the hopes and risks young Kenyans face when they relocate abroad to build better futures.

"A journey that began with hope has ended in tears," read one tribute shared online.

Community response

News of her passing spread quickly on social media, where friends, relatives, and members of the Kenyan diaspora in Australia shared messages of grief and condolence. Members of the Kenyan community in Sydney have joined her family in Kenya in offering support and assistance as funeral preparations begin.

Her death has also highlighted the difficulties families face when a loved one dies overseas—repatriation arrangements, funeral planning, and the distance from home often add to the emotional strain during mourning.

What comes next

The family is awaiting the outcome of the police inquiry and autopsy results. They have urged Australian authorities to provide a full account of the circumstances surrounding Chebii's death and to ensure that any workplace safety concerns are addressed.

The Kenyan embassy in Australia has been asked to assist with repatriation logistics and to ensure the family receives timely updates on the investigation.
