Ghana's NPP Approves Proxy Voting for Diaspora in October 3 National Elections

Ghana's New Patriotic Party has opened the door for thousands of diaspora members to vote in its internal leadership elections, reversing years of restrictions that kept overseas party faithful on the sidelines.

The NPP National Council approved proxy voting for the party's national officers election scheduled for October 3, 2026, according to Frederick Opare Ansah, chairman of the National Officers Elections Committee. The decision removes a contentious barrier that had excluded eligible diaspora delegates from recent internal party contests, including the presidential primaries held in January.

What Changed

The new voting rules were approved by both the party's National Executive Committee and National Council. Ansah told MyJoyOnline that proxy voting will specifically enable NPP diaspora members to participate in the leadership race, addressing longstanding complaints from overseas branches.

Previously, proxy voting had been prohibited over concerns about possible abuse by delegates. The restriction sparked debate during the party's presidential primaries earlier this year, with diaspora associations arguing they were being disenfranchised despite financial and organizational support for the party.

Why It Matters Now

The timing carries weight. The NPP is in opposition after losing the December 2024 general election to John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress. Internal elections for national officers — including the party chairman, general secretary, and other executive positions — will shape the NPP's strategy heading into future contests.

The party's National Delegates Conference and election of national officers is set for September 19, with balloting for cleared aspirants scheduled for September 9. But multiple sources now confirm the final election date as October 3, with proxy voting in effect.

For diaspora members, the reversal is significant. Ghanaians abroad — concentrated in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada — have historically been active in fundraising, campaign organization, and mobilization efforts for both major parties. Yet their formal participation in internal party governance has been inconsistent.

What Comes Next

The NPP's move comes as the rival National Democratic Congress also advances its own internal elections. The NDC on September 10 announced that nominations for its 2026 Constituency Executive Elections will open on Tuesday, September 15. Deputy General Secretary Barbara Serwaa Asamoah confirmed the timeline follows the party's earlier electoral timetable.

Both parties are rebuilding their structures after the 2024 election cycle. For the NPP, the October 3 vote will be the first major test of factional strength within the party since the defeat of presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia, who conceded the morning after the December vote.

Whether other parties follow the NPP's lead on diaspora proxy voting remains to be seen. But for now, overseas NPP members have a seat at the table — even if they can't physically be in the room.
