Two young Kenyans mourned after sudden deaths in Australia and Seattle
Sheila Jepkorir Chebii, 17 May in Sydney, and Biko Miregwa, 8 May in Seattle — both deaths have united diaspora communities in grief and fundraising efforts.

The Kenyan diaspora is mourning the loss of two young community members who died within days of each other in Australia and the United States.
Sydney death after six weeks abroad
Sheila Jepkorir Chebii, originally from Kimumu in Eldoret, died in Sydney on 17 May 2026, just six weeks after arriving in Australia on 5 April. She had relocated in search of new opportunities, according to reports from Mwakilishi and Samrack Media.
Friends in Sydney's Kenyan community described her death as devastating, saying it reflects the hopes and risks many young Kenyans take when relocating abroad to build better futures. Relatives and community members have rallied to support repatriation efforts.
Seattle death after short illness
In the United States, Biko Miregwa died in Seattle on 8 May following a short illness, according to multiple diaspora outlets. Details of his background and the circumstances of his death remain limited, but his passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from Kenyan communities across the U.S. and back home.
Community response
Both deaths, occurring within nine days of each other, have brought together Kenyan diaspora communities in mourning and mutual support. Social media platforms have been flooded with tributes and messages of solidarity for the affected families.
Community fundraising efforts are underway in both Australia and the United States to assist with repatriation and funeral expenses. The tragedies underscore the emotional and financial challenges diaspora families face when sudden deaths occur far from home.
The two losses come amid a difficult period for the diaspora, following earlier deaths in Australia in March that also required community mobilization for repatriation support.
