Seventy-one percent of recipients are women, with pregnant and breastfeeding mothers making up the majority.
The numbers reflect strong early demand for what health experts are calling a potential game-changer in HIV prevention—a long-acting injectable that requires just two shots per year, compared to daily oral pills that many people struggle to maintain. For South Africa, which carries one of the world's highest HIV burdens, the rapid uptake signals both the scale of need and the appeal of a prevention method that fits more easily into people's lives.
Where the Rollout Is Strongest
Gauteng province has recorded the highest number of lenacapavir initiations, with more than 26,357 people started on the injection, according to the Department of Health. KwaZulu-Natal follows with 11,941 initiations, then North West with 4,479, Western Cape with 4,446, Mpumalanga with 4,294, and Eastern Cape with 3,606.
The rollout has been carried out in collaboration with provincial health departments and marks South Africa's participation in what researchers hope will be a turning point in HIV prevention. Lenacapavir contains the antiretroviral medicine of the same name and provides six months of protection against HIV infection per dose. Clinical trials showed it to be highly effective, and South African health authorities moved quickly to integrate it into the public system.
