Sheila Jepkorir Chebii died in Sydney on May 17, six weeks after leaving Kenya to build a new life in Australia. She was 26.
The accounting graduate from Kabarak University had arrived on April 5 with plans to pursue a master's degree in accounting and auditing, her family said. Born in Kimumu, Eldoret, Sheila was the fourth of five children and had enrolled in the CPA(K) qualification before deciding to study abroad. Her parents, Samuel Kiptanui Chebii and Linah Tanui, viewed her education as a pathway to lift their community in Sambirir, Marakwet East.
What Happened
Preliminary information suggests Sheila may have suffered a fatal fall while on duty, though the exact circumstances remain unconfirmed. Her father, a retired teacher, said the family is struggling to understand what happened and has called on Australian authorities to conduct a full investigation, including a review of CCTV footage and workplace safety procedures.
The family has also appealed to the Kenyan embassy in Australia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide diplomatic support and ensure transparency. An autopsy is expected after preliminary police inquiries are completed.
Community Response
News of Sheila's death spread quickly across social media, where friends and members of the Kenyan diaspora in Australia shared tributes. Many described her as hardworking, ambitious, and full of promise. In Kobil village, relatives, neighbours, and friends have gathered at the family home to offer support.
Members of the Kenyan community in Sydney said the loss reflects the hopes and risks young Kenyans face when they relocate abroad in search of better futures. Her death has also highlighted the logistical and emotional difficulties families confront when a loved one dies overseas—repatriation costs, funeral planning, and the distance from home all compound the grief.
What Comes Next
The Kenyan embassy in Australia is expected to provide consular assistance as the family awaits the results of the investigation. Funeral arrangements are underway, with the Australian Kenyan community coordinating support alongside family members in Kenya.
