Faith Kipyegon Opens 2026 Season With World-Leading 5000m in Shanghai
Kenya's quadruple Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon launched her 2026 outdoor track season with a commanding victory at the Shanghai Diamond League, clocking 14:24.14 in the women's 5000m—the fastest time in the world this

Faith Kipyegon is back, and she's picked up exactly where she left off.
The 32-year-old Kenyan star opened her 2026 outdoor track season on Saturday, May 17, with a victory in the women's 5000m at the Shanghai Diamond League. Her time: 14 minutes, 24.14 seconds—the fastest in the world this year.
It wasn't a stroll. Kipyegon edged Ethiopia's Likina Amebaw by seven hundredths of a second in a stacked field. Senayet Getachew of Ethiopia took third in 14:24.71, and Medina Eisa placed fourth in 14:24.76. The top four finishers were separated by 0.62 seconds. Seven women ran under 14:33.
A strategic choice
Kipyegon bypassed her signature event, the 1500m, to run the longer distance. Speaking ahead of the meeting, she said the decision was deliberate: "I wanted to challenge myself early in the season and build strength. The 5,000m is perfect for that, and Shanghai is always a great place to compete."
It's a familiar blueprint. In 2023, Kipyegon used the 5000m as a strength base before going on to rewrite the record books in multiple disciplines later that season. She broke from a tight lead pack in the final stretch in Shanghai and held off Amebaw with the kind of finishing kick that has become her signature.
The race was scheduled before the main Diamond League program, and while it didn't offer Diamond League points, it sent a strong message to her competitors: Faith Kipyegon is in form, and she's ready.
The road ahead
Kipyegon already owns the women's 1500m world record and is the reigning four-time world champion at the distance. She also opened the year on the roads in February, winning the Monaco Run 10K in 29:47, and last summer ran the fastest mile in history by a woman at Nike's Breaking4 showcase in Paris.
With fellow Kenyan star Beatrice Chebet currently away from competition during her transition to motherhood, Kipyegon stands as the clear standard-bearer of Kenya's middle-distance dominance this season.
She's expected to feature at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene and the Monaco Diamond League on July 10, where she's slated to run the 3000m. Her ultimate focus remains the Diamond League Final in Brussels, where she aims to secure a sixth trophy.
The 2026 Diamond League season continues with stops in Rome and Paris in the coming weeks. And if Saturday's performance is any indication, Kipyegon will be the one to beat.
