Bryan Mbeumo has made history as the first recipient of SuperSport's African Premier League Player of the Month award, a new recognition that puts the spotlight on the continent's talent lighting up England's top division.

The Manchester United forward claimed the August 2026 honor after a fan vote across MultiChoice markets, including French-speaking countries, announced on September 16. Mbeumo beat a shortlist that included Ghana's Antoine Semenyo, Ivory Coast's Mamadou Sangaré, Nigeria's Semi Ajayi, and Senegal's Nobel Mendy.

A standout month at Old Trafford

The Cameroon international's defining performance came in United's 5-2 demolition of Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on August 30 — the club's first Premier League victory of the season. That result helped stabilize a difficult start to the campaign, after newly promoted Hull City had shocked United 2-0 on the opening weekend, with nominees Ajayi and Mendy both on the scoresheet.

SuperSport, part of the MultiChoice Group now owned by CANAL+, launched the award to celebrate African players competing in the Premier League each month. The monthly winners will receive a trophy and advance to contend for an African Premier League Player of the Season award at the end of the campaign.

What it means for diaspora fans

The new award reflects the growing influence of African footballers in the world's most-watched league — and the increasing clout of African broadcast audiences. The voting mechanism is integrated into SuperSport Predictor, the broadcaster's Premier League game where users predict results and compete in challenges. The top monthly participant wins a smartphone, and the season's top 20 finishers each receive one.

DStv subscribers can unlock additional prizes, with the season leader eligible for a VIP experience if they vote in at least five Player of the Month rounds.

For Mbeumo, the award is a marker of his growing status at United and within the diaspora — a player to watch as the Premier League season unfolds and African players continue to shape its narrative.
